If you want to get serious about beach detecting, it doesn't matter what detector you are using now, you have to get yourself a CS4PI. |
I wonder if anybody reading this remembers the beach detecting craze which was happening around the turn of the century ? Names like Ace beach detectorist, 'Willie the Wizard', spring to mind and of course the truly excellent Pulse Induction machines designed by Eric Foster. There were actually busloads of detecting enthusiasts going out to spanish beaches and coming back with quite a haul. Central to all of this was the unfortunate fact of life that regular detectors don't work very well on the beach. It's on account of the high salinity affecting the conductivity of the ground and sending the detector haywire. The only metal detector technology which could punch its way through wet salt and sand was Pulse Induction, thus C.Scope's legendary Pulse Machine was born and the latest version to come out is the CS4PI. Nowadays, things have quietened down a bit, which is just the way I like it. There's nothing better than detecting on a beach, early in the morning or late afternoon, when there are no crowds, just me and my CS4PI and the sharp clear signals telling me I've found yet another piece of treasure lost on the beach.
Using the CS4PI is pretty much the same as an inland detector. It's an automatic pulse system so it's switch on and go. You need to adjust the Pulse Frequency but it's not critical and once you've found the right setting for the beach in question, that's it. I like the lightness of this detector. It is well made with good protection against water splashes, sand or dust. Be clear, however, the CS4PI is not an underwater detector - that's a completely different kettle of fish ! I have used the CS4PI on beaches all around Europe, found huge amounts of small change, any number of toy cars (donated to any small child who happened to be showing an interest - and to their complete amazement), several watches (some working) , various gold and silver chains and rings, .. car keys even ! I can only guess how their day ended up when they couldn't get into their car.......If only they'd had a CS4PI ?
In my opinion, beach detecting is the greatest hobby all on its own. It gives an added dimension to a day on the beach. No longer do you have to sit there getting bored and sunburned. Instead, you could be getting some excercise with a sense of purpose. You will probably find enough change to buy your icecreams and maybe lunch for the whole family. Now and again you will strike it really rich - a diamond ring or even a Rolex maybe.
The CS4PI works well on inland sites too, but there's no discrimination possible with the Pulse system, so if you're site is severely iron contaminated, the false signals are going to drive you nuts. Notwithstanding, the CS4PI provides outstanding depth in most site conditions.
VERDICT
If you want to get serious about beach detecting, it doesn't matter what detector you are using now, you have to get yourself a CS4PI. My sincere advice is "don't mess around with so-called dual purpose machines. These will only give you mediocre beach performance. Get yourself the beach specialist. For the little money it costs to get a CS4PI, you can't afford not to".
