Treasure Hunting, like any other hobby, involves a level of skill, so the way you use your detector is at least as important as its technical sophistication. If you watch closely how a long time detectorist uses his machine, you will see it's completely different to a beginner. The electronic design of the CS1220R has taken the experience of the most skilled detectorists and incorporated it into 3 styles of detecting, selected on a mode change switch. It's a really smart way of encouraging you to use the detector in the most effective way. That's the theory so I am pleased to report how it works in practice?
Successful treasure hunters tend to be meticulous types, very thorough in their search technique and with loads of patience. The CS1220R is custom made for this type of character. You don't have to keep the search-head 'in motion' as you do with a lot of the detectors on the market today. You can poke the detector around in the undergrowth and bring the search-head to a complete stop over the place where you can just about make out a signal. Then you can switch in the target analysis side of the detector and decide whether to dig or not. I like to set up the CS1220R in the audio discrimination mode. That way, you're getting a signal on everything (which gives great confidence that the detector is working to its maximum potential), but high pitched tones signal good targets and low tones indicate bad. But there are lots of other ways you can use the machine.
The classic way of using the CS1220R is to search normally in ground mode, which is for maximum depth. Then, when you encounter a signal, switch momentarily to discriminate mode and analyse the signal. It's pretty simple really.
The iron identification facility on this machine is outstanding. As anyone who has done farmland detecting will know, small iron is the detectorists' nightmare. Often, the most lasting remnant of long gone buildings are huge quantities of iron building nails. As the old building crumbles or is demolished, the nails get scattered, sink into the ground and gradually rust away. Sometimes you can't even see them but the rust is enough to give a signal from the detector. Any detector which can deal with this sort of iron contamination is worth its weight in gold, in my opinion (no pun intended). The CS1220R is such a detector - making it my number 1 choice for serious farmland detecting.
All of these clever features come in a well balanced format. The detector is solidly built with attention to detail that you just don't find on other brands of detector.
VERDICT
Classic design with an enthusiastic cult following, the CS1220R requires some experience of detecting to fully appreciate its built-in operating modes. Highly recommended for serious detecting projects on farmland / woodland. (quite a number of professional archaeologists use 1220s). The CS1220R also copes well with beach ground conditions. Suits a methodical temperament.
