Do I need a special detector when detecting on the beach?

Wet sand is electrically conductive, due to the effects of the salt from the sea. This makes the beach react like a big "target" if a lot of power is used when detecting, it also reduces the detector's performance significantly. The P.I. system as used on the C.Scope CS4PI is not affected by wet sand, so excellent performance is achieved with this type of detector in these areas. However, a P.I. does not work so well "inland" as one the features of P.I. is that it does not feature any form of discrimination, so you will find all sorts of metallic objects that you may not be interested in !.This is not such a problem on the beach, as ferrous Items (iron based) rust away quickly due to the effects of the salt water.

Can I detect wherever I like?

No, you must always seek the landowner’s permission otherwise you could be trespassing on someone’s land. If you are detecting on a beach, you should obtain a Crown Foreshore Permit. You can apply for a permit by visiting: http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/rural-and-coastal/coastal/metal-detecting/

Do I need a licence to operate a Metal Detector in the UK?

In the UK the requirement to have a licence was abolished in 1984 after successful lobbying by C.Scope International.
